Archbishop Desmond Tutu

When a couple approached us to plan their bespoke honeymoon through South Africa, including a cast of colourful and inspiring people they hoped to meet along the way, we said “Sure, where would you like to start?” A few months later they were sitting down to chat with none other than Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Mpilo Tutu, one of the world’s great champions of social justice – and a very special friend of Brown + Hudson.

It’s hard to know where to begin in summing up all that’s inspiring in the life and work of Reverend Tutu. One of the key players in bringing about the downfall of the apartheid regime, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his extraordinary efforts to combat poverty and injustice. Two years later he was named Archbishop of Cape Town, which helped to begin healing South Africa’s wounds and ease the country’s transition to democracy.

We arranged for our newlyweds to have tea with the Reverend, swapping stories and discussing South Africa’s continuing struggle for political harmony. He was happy to explain his role as head of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, as well as his more recent campaigning to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS in Africa. It was an eye-opening and inspirational experience for our clients, giving them unique insight into the country’s troubled past and a glimpse into its uncertain future. As for the personal marriage blessing from the Archbishop – well, that was just icing on the wedding cake.

It’s his willingness to interact with ordinary people, to hear their stories and understand their worlds, that has made Archbishop Tutu such a universally admired figure. Our honeymooning couple were inspired by meeting him and returned to their lives back home with a new perspective. They weren’t the only ones.
