Discover Colombia

Colombia is back. Say its name and we all know the connotations that spring to mind. But now close your eyes and think of Sofia Vergara mouthing it, Col-ommmmm-bi-aaaaaaa. It’s sexy and alluring, tempting and glamorous. It’s a country with so much to offer and like nothing you expected.

Bogota is one of those under-the-radar cities that turns out to be a lot more fun than you ever realised. Colombians like to look fabulous and to party in the city’s trendy Zona Rosa and at Brown + Hudson we know the right people to get you into the right parties and reserve an intimate corner table at our favourite restaurants beforehand.

But there are many other ways in which Brown + Hudson can show you the rich diversity of this country. Given the terrain, a private plane will save you time and allow us to deliver you to more remote corners. Should you start or finish on the Caribbean coast? Why not both. Cartagena weaves a lazy spell on all who visit and the spirit of Gabriel Garcia Marquez is very much alive. You could use it as a jumping off point to the San Andres islands where you can take over your own private palm-scattered atoll or meander between them on a fully crewed yacht.

We can take you south to Cali, known as the country’s capital of Salsa, to be taught to shimmy from the best masters in the world. (Like Shakira, these hips don’t lie.) Then to the vast, almost impenetrable jungle bordering the Amazon river that covers almost one third of the country for an intimate look at this delicate ecosystem.

Afterwards head to the rolling flat savannah of Los Llanos. This is cowboy country where you can base yourself at a hacienda and ride out towards the Orinoco River, helping with the cattle droving as the Llaneros teach you their songs of home and loves won and lost.

We can arrange guides to show you snow-capped volcanoes in the Parque Nacional los Nevados with trails that undulate through cloudforest before emerging to stunning views of the still-active 17,500ft tall Nevado del Ruiz. And if you are up for the challenge there are four other peaks all over 15,000ft. We could then fly you on to San Gil to white water raft on the Rio Fonce, or perhaps just enjoy some fishing.

“The only danger is wanting to stay,” says the Colombian tourist board’s slogan and we think this is a pretty neat way of summing things up. Quite frankly, the only injury we have ever heard of in Colombia is a hang over. While we’re on the subject, could we ask you to bring us back a bottle of La Hechicera rum – we can get the Riascos family to show you around their estate if you would like. Salud!
