SEYCHELLES

When the gates slammed shut behind Adam and Eve, the place they left behind can't have been dissimilar to the Seychelles. This archipelago of 115 islands off Africa's east coast is so breathtakingly beautiful you quickly toss the cliché meter aside and just let the paradise comparisons fly. Strolling perfect beaches overlooking azure seas, exploring untouched forests overflowing with lush greenery, it's easy to convince yourself you've travelled back before the Fall. Certainly those in charge today have managed to avoid the original sin of unoriginal developers, thoughtfully ensuring their Eden balances relaxed luxury with a respect for the islands' unique ecological treasures.

Incredibly rich in flora and fauna, including many indigenous species, the Seychelles have been called everything from "a living museum of natural history" to "the Galápagos of the Indian Ocean" – and even, with the inevitable hint of biblical ramifications, "the next Noah's Ark." Indeed, a fear of Old Testament–style reprisals may be what's motivated a pioneering experiment on one island to turn back the ecological clock and reverse the damage inflicted during the brief time humans have dwelt there. Alien plants and animals introduced by early settlers have been removed as scientists try to rehabilitate the vegetation and wildlife (including the curiously named flying foxes) that once flourished here. At the same time, materials recovered during rehabilitation have been used to build a luxury lodge that blends in naturally with the environment. As a guest you not only enjoy breathtaking surroundings, comfortable amenities, attentive service and superb local cuisine – you also leave guilt-free, knowing your stay has helped further this wonderful project.

If you're keen to see more, there are two magnificent UNESCO World Heritage sites to explore. Find the world's heaviest nut, the beautifully shaped coco de mer, which only grows at Vallee-de-Mai. Or discover Aldabra, the largest raised coral atoll on the planet, and encounter spectacular marine life – including the largest known population of giant tortoises – from the comfort of your exclusive private yacht.

Wherever you explore in the Seychelles, the prevailing themes are sustainability and harmony with the environment. Offering a wide selection of fine hotels and other luxury accommodations, this is the ideal destination for a romantic getaway or a wonderfully rejuvenating chapter within a longer journey to Africa. Either way, we'll help you create your particular Eden as you discover what once was – and dream of what might be again.
